Chamorro or Chamoru people are what you call the locals or indigenous peoples of Mariana Islands (southern part of submerged mountain range from Guam to near Japan). These include Guam which is an American territory, Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
Chamorro’s language is an Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language which is spoken by around 47,000 people, mostly from Guam. This said language has much Spanish influence given that Spanish ruled over the island for 300 years. Being said, most of the Chamorro words are then originated from Spanish words and the rest were from American English, Chinese, and even Japanese.
Generally, Chamorro’s are Roman Catholic (influenced with Spanish) and currently, only few of them practice their old customs and beliefs. On the other hand, Chamorro cuisine and food have been influenced not just by the Spanish but with so many cultures like Filipino, American, and Japanese, thus, event their customs and culture.
Now a days, to keep the spirit and culture of Chamorros alive, Guam has few cultural sites where tourist, visitors, or even young locals can visit and learn more about how ancient Chamorros used to live like before. Like museums with the ancient Chamorros crafts and places where you can taste and buy Chamorro food.
