This village was established in 1945 to accommodate the residents of Sumay village in Orote Peninsula who were evicted by the Japanese occupying forces and the U.S Navy during World War II. It is one of the two villages that don’t have a name derived from the Chamorro language; the other one is Tamuning which is a Carolinian word. Santa Rita is located on the southwestern side of the island and has a population base of approximately 7,500 as of year 2000. The village is comprised primarily of older single-family homes and has two primary subdivisions: Hyundai Santa Rita and Santa Rosa Subdivision. Not to include the military housing areas, Naval Magazine and Naval Station, the village of Santa Rita is one of the smallest, quietest and lest modernized villages in the island. They have few stores here – the D’s Corner Store and Santa Rita Store – with the new addition Santa Rita Video Store. The village is surrounded by beautiful natural water sources like Tarzan Falls (which serves as the border of Santa Rita to Yona) and the Fena Lake (which is the border of the village to Talofofo).
